2003 Mainland Intern Profiles

Oscar is a senior in college and will graduate next year from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He plans to continue his education and obtain a Master's degree in Engineering. He hopes to continue his education to the highest level possible. Oscar was born in El Salvador. His mother and father came to America in search for a better future, a better life. He came to America in 1992. He was the second person in his family to graduate from high school and the first one to attend college. (Top)

Miguel is a senior at CSU Bakersfield and is interested in optics. He is the oldest of his brothers and the first in his family with the opportunity to attend a university. His dreams and support from his parents has enabled him to reach his short-term goals. He would like to accomplish his long-term goals and replenish his parents for their hard work. (Top)

Donald has one year left of undergraduate studies and has decided to further his education in electrical engineering by applying to a Ph.D. program. He enjoys the academic lifestyle and has found research that really interests him. Donald wants to research ways to increase clock speeds for analog to digital conversion circuits. In the process, he wants to use digital circuits to process communication signals that are in the giga hertz range. (Top)

Alex is currently pursuing B.S. degrees in Mathematics and Electrical Engineering at the University of Houston. After attending graduate school he would like to work as an electrical engineer in the fields of electromagnetics or signal processing, or in some area of applied mathematics. Alex is originally from Barbados and enjoys computer typography, photography, martial arts, the philosophy and history of math, science fiction and writing. (Top)

Diana recently completed her sophomore year at San Diego State University, where she is pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. She plans to attend graduate school where she can obtain a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering. The types of careers that interest her are the kind where she can continue to learn and where she can potentially contribute her knowledge to the advancement of technology. Diana comes from a very loving and hard working Mexican family of five. She lived in Mexico for the first ten years of her life and has been in the U.S. for ten years. Education is very important to her because it is the one way she can repay her parents for all of their support and hard work. (Top)

Erika is a sophomore at Skyline College who is majoring in computer engineering. She enjoys taking math course and would like to design, create new inventions and develop something in a more advanced or useful way. She plans to transfer to a four-year university and obtain a Master's degree and a Ph.D. She is interested in a career related to computers. Erika grew up in El Salvador. (Top)

Blanca attends Cabrillo College. She wants to explore careers in science such as chemistry, biology and optometry. Blanca was born in Watsonville, California. She is the first one in her family to attend college. It pleases her to see that her first year in college has set a great example for her brother, her sister and everyone in her family that didn't think college was for them. (Top)

Hamadi just completed his first-year at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is currently undeclared; however, he anticipates changing his major to Astrophysics at the beginning of the next school year. He came to this decision based on his interest in learning why different physical phenomena occur as they do (physics) and his desire to explore space. He is considering working for NASA or doing some type of research. Hamadi’s interest in science is a result of the intellectual curiosity and pleasure in applying oneself to challenging tasks, which his parents inspired in him. (Top)

Monica currently attends Contra Costa Community College in San Pablo, California. This fall she will be transferring to the University of California, Berkeley. After two full years working as an optical assistant she became a nationally certified optician and contact lens technician. With her husbands support, her decision to attend optometry school and become a doctor of optometry ensures that she will have a long career doing what she loves. (Top)

Jaclyn is currently a junior at UCLA studying electrical engineering. Upon completing her undergraduate work she plans to pursue a Master's degree in biomedical engineering and enter industry. Her main interest is in lasers and their biomedical applications. Jaclyn is very involved in sports, particularly track and field. (Top)
