Hartnell Astronomy Short Course - The Distant Universe

July 30 - August 4, 2007, 10:00 AM - 4:15 PM, Hartnell College, Flyer

2007 Application - online, pdf

Participants: High school seniors and entering and continuing college students from all majors interested in astronomy and technology.

Instructional Team:
Candace Church, Laura Lopez and Kate Rubin (UC Santa Cruz), Conor Laver (UC Berkeley), Pimol Moth and Andy Newton (Hartnell College)

Description: This course will be a survey of astronomical topics focused on galaxies and the distant Universe. The course will consist of hands-on activities, lectures, telescope observations, and interactive problem solving, and students will have the opportunity to design and carry out their own experiments. Astronomy-related career paths will be discussed, and a field trip to Lick Observatory will be included. This course will be acceptable for physics credit at any state college or university.

Some of the questions we will explore include:

  • How do astronomers observe and learn about distant galaxies?
  • How do we measure the distances to stars and galaxies?
  • What do the shapes and colors of galaxies tell us about how they formed and evolved?
  • What do we know about how the Universe began?

Benefits to students:

  • Meet other students with similar interests!
  • Practice critical thinking, and learn how to ask questions like a researcher!
  • Practice your presentation skills!
  • Receive school and career counseling and recommendations!
