Professional Development Program - Workshop: March 13 - 17, 2008 Maui, Hawaii
The CfAO Professional Development Program (PDP) is a flexible, multi-year program for scientists and engineers at the early stages of their careers, with a primary focus on graduate students. Participants in the PDP attend a 5-day teaching workshop held each spring. They work on a design team during and after the workshop, continue developing skills through mini-workshops and expert consultation, and put their new teaching skills into practice. The practical teaching experience takes place in one of CfAO's educational programs or courses, acting as a "teaching lab" for PDP participants. PDP participants leave the program as highly trained, innovative, and reflective scientist educators.

The Akamai Internship Program offers summer internship opportunities for community
college and undergraduate students residing in Hawaii.
The Akamai Maui Internship Program offers Maui Community College students and undergraduates from other four-year universities an opportunity to get involved in CfAO research. The program is a collaboration between the CfAO, Maui Economic Development Board, Maui Community College (MCC) and Air Force Maui Optical and Supercomputing Site (AMOS). The interns start with a 5-day short-course taught at MCC, then go to their internship site and finally present their summer project at a student
The Akamai Observatory Internship Program offers undergraduate students that are Hawaii residents internship positions at Hawaii Island observatories. Students placed in these positions will attend the Akamai Observatory Short Course.

The Observatory Short Course is a multi-disciplinary course to prepare undergraduate interns for a range of summer research projects at observatories on the Big Island.

Due to insufficient funds we will not be accepting applications for a new 2008 Mainland Internship cohort. We will continue to be available to work with past interns. The Mainland Internship Program offers community college students and undergraduates
from four-year universities an opportunity to get involved in CfAO research.
The
interns
start with a 5-day short course at UC Santa Cruz, then go to their internship
site and finally present their summer project at a student symposium held at
UC Santa Cruz.

Hartnell
Astronomy Short Course - August,
Salinas, CA
The Astronomy Short Course takes place at Hartnell Community College (Salinas,
CA) for entering students as well as continuing students with science majors.
It is designed to teach general astronomy and optic principles through inquiry
based teaching as well as attract students to the astronomy major early-on
at the community college level.
“Research and Practice in Teaching and Learning Science,” Education

This course, taught by Professor Doris Ash, is specifically designed for scientists
who want to explore science inquiry teaching and learning. Students gain an
understanding of how to connect their practice to theory, and apply this knowledge
to the design of their own teaching activity.
Stars,
Sight and Science - Summer,
UC Santa Cruz, CA
Stars, Sight and Science is a four-week course for high school students, designed
and taught by CfAO scientists. The students learn about vision, astronomy
and optics through inquiry, field trips and projects that they prepare and
present at the end of the four weeks.

Open Labs - Academic Year,

The goal of "Saturday Open Lab" is to expose undergraduates from
underrepresented groups to research at CfAO sites, and to generate interest
in our internship program. Students who attend a Saturday Open Lab will learn
basic optics (through an inquiry experience) and find out about your research
through a brief presentation and tour of your facility.
CalTeach Activity - Fall and/or Spring, UC Santa Cruz
CalTeach is a program for science undergraduates interested in K-12 teaching. CILS/CfAO/CalTeach would like to host a one-day activity for students enrolled in the program, as well as prospective new students. The content of this activity is flexible. The event will be held in at UCSC once or twice a year (Fall and Spring).
