Summer School on Adaptive Optics 2006
Location: University of California in Santa Cruz, California
COST: Graduate Students and Post -Doctoral Researchers: $400 Conference fee,
which includes all food and double occupancy lodging for the week.
There is an additional fee of $120 for single occupancy for the week.
US based students are also eligible for travel support within designated limits.
All others will be charged the $400 Conference fee, plus $750 per person single
occupancy, or $660 per person double occupancy, which includes food and lodging
for the week.

The CfAO Summer School, a professional training workshop on Adaptive Optics, will be held at the University of California, Santa Cruz from 4-11 August 2006. This is an annual event sponsored by the National Science Foundation Center for Adaptive Optics. The workshop will cover the concepts, specifics and design of Adaptive Optics Systems for different applications including, but not limited to, imaging through the turbulent atmosphere, e.g. astronomy, and biological applications, e.g. vision science. Topics will include an introduction to AO systems and their applications; discussion of the components of an AO system, including wavefront sensing and beam compensation hardware; wavefront reconstruction techniques; control system algorithms; the different types of AO systems; related image processing techniques as well as laboratory and computer demonstrations. The workshop is primarily intended for graduate students and post-doctoral researchers entering the field of Adaptive Optics as well as for technicians, scientists and engineers.

Flight ticket reimbursement requirements: Your flight tickets must be purchased by 14 July to insure the least expensive rate. No international tickets will be reimbursed, except by prior approval from cfao@ucolick.org. You must fly on a US carrier. You are expected to find the most inexpensive flight.
Ground transportation reimbursement requirements: You will not be reimbursed for car rental expenses unless you carpool with at least 2 additional people to share the expense. Please see "Airport Transportation" below for details on the approved airport shuttle service.Car travel reimbursement requiements: Car travel is reimbursed at the rate of $0.445 per mile, not to exceed the cost of same distance air travel.
Reimbursement forms will be included in your Summer School on AO information packet, to be picked up when you check in at the Conference Offices in the Crown College Library. Remember to include all original receipts when you turn in your reimbursement forms. We will have someone available at the Summer School to answer any questions you may have.
Call the Santa Cruz Airporter at 800-497-4997 to make shuttle transportation arrangements from either the San Francisco Airport or the San Jose Airport. YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE RESERVATIONS AHEAD OF TIME! Advanced rountrip reservations are required. The cost is non-refundable and must be prepaid with a credit card. Mention that you are attending a conference at UCSC and would like the conference rate: $80 roundtrip from San Francisco Airport, and $70 roundtrip from San Jose Airport. Let them know that you would like to be dropped off at the Crown Merrill Apartments. PLEASE NOTE: You must specifically request that your return pick up from UCSC to the airport be at the Crown/Merrill Apartments. Otherwise, the regular Airporter pick up is at the Baytree Bookstore.

Distance from the San Francisco Airport to Santa Cruz: about 66 miles
Highway 101 South, towards San Jose
Highway 880 South, which will change its name to Highway 17. The road will become a mountain freeway.
Highway 17 ends in Santa Cruz
When you reach Santa Cruz, continue on Highway 1, following the signs to Half Moon Bay. Highway 1 will no longer be a freeway, but will become a city street as you take a right turn onto Mission Street.
Turn right onto Bay (Look for MacDonald's on the left. The next right turn will be Bay)
Follow Bay to the entrance of campus at High Street. Enter the campus.
From the San Jose AirportDistance from San Jose Airport to Santa Cruz: about 35 miles
Highway 880 South, which will change its name to Highway 17. The road will become a mountain freeway.

To drive to the Crown/Merrill Apartments, go back to Chinquapin and turn Right. Turn Right into the next parking lot and park your car. We are being housed in Apartment Buildings 1 through 4, near the entrance of the parking lot.

If you know that you will be arriving between 10:00 PM and 1:00 AM, email or call Paula (cfao@ucolick.org/831-459-5592) by Friday, 30 July so that Conference Service personnel can be notified that they need make arrangements for a proctor to let you into your room. Upon your late arrival on campus, drive in the main entrance and you will see a kiosk on your right. Pull over, and tell the person at the Kiosk to please call the Crown/Merrill Apartments proctor at 459-2100 to get into your room. The next morning you should check in at the Crown Library Conference Office to get your room key, meal card, and parking permit. Be sure to put your parking permit in your car immediately! Parking is strictly enforced on campus.
Lectures will be held at Merrill College room #102.
Meals are provided from Friday, August 4th dinner through Friday, August 11th
lunch(unless you have added an extra night's lodging, which would include Friday's
dinner and breakfast on the additional day) at Merrill College Dining Hall.
The hours are:
Breakfast: 7:00 AM to 8:30 AM
Lunch: 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM
Dinner: 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Please note that these are the posted dinning hall hours. Refer to the agenda for the time in which lecture breaks will occur.
We will be housed in apartments with a shared bathroom, kitchen and living room. The bedrooms are equipped with a telephone line, and local and campus calls are complimentary. Long distance calling cards can be purchased at the Conference Office. There is an ethernet connections in each bedroom. For specifics to get connected click here. Please note that campus accommodations are not equipped with televisions, alarm clocks or air conditioning. Apartments have refrigerators that can be used, but ovens and stoves will be turned off. Cooking is not permitted at any time. Microwave ovens, hot plates and coffeepots are not allowed.
Crown Library Conference Office
The office is staffed with student Conference Assistants who coordinate check-ins,
check-outs, distribute mail and phone messages, and are a resource for routine
information and services.

Conference attendees should give the Conference Office telephone number (831)
502-7002, to family members, for emergency messages only. A Conference Office
staff member will be available for messages from 7:00am-10:00pm daily, and the
staff will make every attempt to deliver emergency messages as soon as possible.
If you need to reach a conferee after 10:00pm please call Campus Dispatch at
(831)459-4861. Emergency messages only will be taken after hours and will be
routed to the Campus Police Department. Please call 911 for all life and safety
emergencies.
Mail Service
Guests can receive mail and packages during their stay as addressed below. Packages
cannot be accepted if delivered more than one week prior to participant's arrival.

24-hour emergency care is available at Dominican Hospital, 1555 Soquel Drive,

St., Santa Cruz, 831-458-6310 (Monday-Friday 9:00am-9:00pm, Saturday-Sunday

Parking
Parking lots are located near each college, and parking is by permit only. Guests staying on campus will receive a conference permit at the time of check-in. Our staff will direct participants to the nearest conference lot. Additionally, white signs are posted at the entrance to each lot indicating which type of parking permit is allowed. Metered spaces for visitors cost $1.00 per hour and take quarters only. Do not park in reserved or specially posted areas such as Provost, Preceptor, University Vehicle, etc. Cars unauthorized to park in handicapped spaces will receive a $275.00 ticket and be towed at the owner's expense.
Smoke-Free Environment
The State of California has mandated that smoking is not allowed in state-owned buildings and public areas. This applies to all individuals on the UCSC campus and includes all non-residential buildings. Smoking is permitted in designated residential areas only. Each meeting area has a designated smoking section, located outside, at least twenty-five feet away from buildings, doorways, windows and ventilation air intakes. Your Conference Office can provide you with additional information.
Clothing and Personal Items
UCSC is located on the edge of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary with typical summer daytime temperatures of 70-80 F degrees, and nighttime temperatures in the 50-60 F degrees. The weather can become quite cool and foggy, and we strongly recommend bringing a jacket or sweater. The natural setting of UCSC includes both meadows and redwood forests, and we suggest packing a pair of walking shoes.
Linen
Sheets, towels, wash cloths, a pillow, and a blanket are provided.
Buses
Downtown Santa Cruz is located ten minutes away by bus. Buses travel through
campus approximately every 15 minutes and schedules are posted at the individual
bus stops and at all Conference Offices.
Recreation
The swimming pool, weight room, racquetball, outdoor track, tennis and basketball courts may be used by guests when the facilities are not in use by sports camps. A recreation pass must be purchased to use recreation facilities and can be purchased at the recreation office for $3.00 per day to conference attendees. Conference Office staff can provide additional information on recreational facilities, and other attractions in Santa Cruz County.
